Bottle Rockets

Rockets or Bottle Rockets?

There are bottle rockets and there are bottle rockets. There's a difference from one bottle rocket to the next. And all rockets are not bottle rockets.

This is the page to look on if you want very small pop rockets, pop bottle rockets, or bottlerockets. Fireworks rockets larger than a firecracker are not really considered to be bottle rockets. There is no single best bottle rocket design. It all depends on what you like.

Different Bottle Rocket Designs

They vary primarily in the tail you see when the rocket launches, noise effect if any, and in the effect you see when they explode in the sky. For instance, when you see bright white sparks or flashes in the tail, there is titanium present. Orange tails usually consist of the charcoal in the black powder rocket fuel.

The sound of the rocket tails can be different. Orange colored black powder tails fly with a whooshing sound. Some tails may have a crackling sound. Still others have a shrieking sound, called a whistle (see Whistling Moon Travelers, for instance).

Different rocket models will do different things at the apex of their flight. Some rockets pop using a small flash powder charge. Others will display different colored stars. And some others actually do nothing; they just fall to the ground.

Safe Bottle Rocket Launching

When lighting rockets, always point them away from the audience. The flight of rockets is often erratic, and they can come back toward you when it’s windy. It’s a good idea to move your audience and vehicles further away from rockets than from other fireworks. Don't take the chance of a spent rocket coming down and hitting someone or a car.

There are many ways to launch bottle rockets. Despite their name holding bottles to launch rockets is not a good idea. A better rocket launcher is a pipe stuck in the ground, angled away from the crowd. You can fire masses of bottle rockets by drilling a hole in the bottom of a 5 gallon plastic bucket and inserting 6 inches of cannon fuse in it. Then dump about an ounce of black powder in the bottom of the bucket. Unwrap a 144-pack or more of bottle rockets and stand them up in the bucket. Light the fuse and walk away from the bucket. Presto, a mass bottle rocket launcher.
